because their adored, born-again, southern, Sunday-school teaching President, Jimmy Carter, outraged them by refusing to let church schools collect federal tax dollars if they didn't stop sidestepping court-ordered integration.

I wasn't there, I don't know, but Ralph maybe does have reason to know about that stuff.  He gave this detailed account at the Citadel...

I was going to a fundie private school at the time and i remember coming across pamphlets and such.  though i was totally 'immersed' in the fundie baptist culture/paradigm/milieu til i was 17 or so, i was only 11 when the 'moral' 'majority' was formed in '79.

John Dean's Conservatives Without Conscience gives a really good summary of where the fundies were in the late '70's and the evangelicals' rise to prominence.  I'm reading it now and its bringing back all sorts of fun memories.

What i'm admittedly NOT familiar with is how conservative catholics fit into or influence a religious right that is primarily evangelical.  when i was a kid, the animosity towards the pope was almost enough where if the church had been as vocally pro-life then as now some Baptists would've tithed 10% of their paycheck to Planned Parenthood.  my mom cried for days when her sister married a catholic.  current evangelicals are much more willing to cross the theological aisle for conservative causes.

to republicans rape is "God's will" but homosexuality is somehow a "choice". republican yahweh is a dick.
