    “It’s not that our message — we think abortion is wrong, we think same-sex marriage is wrong — didn’t get out. It did get out.  “It’s that the entire moral landscape has changed,” he said. “An increasingly secularized America understands our positions, and has rejected them.”
    I don't know what to make of this.  Has he believed 'till now that we haven't heard them?  Has he believed that we haven't understood them?  That we would come to embrace their positions after they impose them on us by force of law?

    If the Religious Right has believed this, then they and we are more estranged than I ever believed.  I have always assumed that they 'know' that they are right and are therefore justified in imposing their beliefs on us.

    It has never occurred to me that they think we will embrace them once we experience their world.

    A new birth of freedom..

      Think of the following sentence:

      "If they'd just understand where we were coming from, they'd agree with us."
      We use that argument as much, if not more so than they do. That one side argues from fact and evidence, and the other from assertion and...uh, assertion -- doesn't really matter.
