    the healthcare debate as an opportunity to water the bill down, not out of principle, but in order to show how moderate and bipartisan they were.  Interesting, most of those senators are now gone from the senate - lincoln, ben nelson, lieberman, snowe. Other conservative senators who voted for it but who were wise enough to keep their mouths shut (e.g. Tester) survived or probably will survive (e.g. Hagan). The moral of the story is that bogging down the legislative process and making a big deal about how moderate you are is not a winning strategy.
