  •  Maybe blame clinging to American Exceptionalism (2+ / 0-)

We like to almost deify our Founding Fathers as a reason for our "exceptionalism". When we find out that they had feet of clay, that destroys the mythology of being better than the rest of the world.
In discussing the history of the settlement/invasion (?) of the Americas most of my contemporaries have no real idea of the devastation that was visited upon the native inhabitants. Don't WANT to know. They get really upset when I point out how settlers destroyed entire civilizations. And in most cases it's white males that get their undies in a twist. They feel their identities are being challenged. Their heroes are being torn down. Their historical sense of superiority challenged.

The road to excess leads to the palace of Wisdom, I must not have excessed enough
