    Hubble, et al, measured rates of speed of galaxies moving away from us which were at relatively close known distances. That established a mathematical expression. The farther ones moved faster away...expansion.

    The relationship was assumed to be true for even farther objects at unknown distances. Knowing the rate of speed and the mathematical expression allowed the distance, or size, to be calculated.

    Movements are relatively small in our lifetimes when compared to the enormous size of the universe as a whole.
