      "Conservative" is a relative term.  In its literal sense it means you're preserving the status quo.

      What if the status quo were a democratic socialist nation where all classes of people had equal rights, the environment was protected, and people who needed help got it without aspersions being cast upon their character?

      Anyone wanting to maintain that status quo would be a conservative--and sensible, and compassionate.

      The trouble with the conservative movement in this country right now is that the status quo they want to preserve is their own.  The trouble is they can only have that status quo at everyone else's expense.  I don't think most of them understand the relationship between the one and the other.  Those who do understand are the elites and have good reason (from their perspective) not to care.
