  •  I recall an NPR interview one Saturday afternoon (6+ / 0-)

that revealed something very interesting about this Jim Daly guy.
He's smart, decent and open minded.
How the hell did he wind up with Focus on the Family?
Baby steps toward rationality on the right.

    •  I heard that interview as well (3+ / 0-)

It was on On Being with Krista Tippett.  The guy was basically an orphan (horrible childhood) and the awful guy from Focus on the Family basically took him in.  Gave me some insight about some people who are drawn to the religious right -- they need a home, a community -- a safe place in what for many is a dangerous and chaotic world.

I find that a staggering stretch of the imagination, but I will try to wrap my head around it.  That organization produces a high volume of hate.  I could only assume that their senior staff are 100% brainwashed.

      •  Apparently it has been shifting for some time (6+ / 0-)

James Dobson -- who seems to have been forced out a couple of years ago -- was and is as hateful as they come.

In a Feb. 6 Wall Street Journal story on the changes at Focus (for which Dobson also declined to comment), Daly said that “he has no use for the sharp personal attacks on politicians employed by Mr. Dobson. ‘I don’t see evil behind everything.’”

        The story continued:

Mr. Daly said he preferred to build bridges with others. While Mr. Dobson blasted President Barack Obama for “fruitcake” ideas, Mr. Daly praised the president for his devotion to family and last summer attended a White House event celebrating fatherhood.
