    on what part of The City you're in -- T-shirt and shorts in the Castro can turn into sweatshirt and long pants out at the Zoo or anywhere west of Twin Peaks. (Layers are key, along with a large enough daypack to hold them.)

      but I live a sheltered life; I rarely venture beyond Twin Peaks.

      And October is still the month when even those neighborhoods will be relatively balmy. It's not as though it can't happen at other times of course; I recall a Mothers Day in the early 1990s on which temperatures even in the Sunset were well in the 90's. It was pretty stifling even at the ocean.
