The real question is, why did the agent to to Cantor and his rep instead of his bosses?  This tells me the only motive for bypassing his higher-ups is political, and to be more precise, a coup attempt gone horribly wrong.

The extramarital affairs are a red herring.

A thief thinks everybody else is a thief; a liar thinks everybody else is a liar; and a Republican thinks everybody else is as selfish and heartless as they are.

Daily Kos isn't doing a great job of following this story with accuracy. In fairness, the stories within stories make for a hell of mess. But seriously, people, can we stick to known facts?
