  •  I can agree with that, provided we're clear (5+ / 0-)

    on what we mean by "ecology".  I think too many people consider it a kind of peaceful equilibrium, when in fact it's an always-tenuous warfare in which various players - the human body, bacteria - are finding ways to (at best) exploit each other for their own benefit and (at worst) to destroy each other.  We have a tendency to romanticize the natural state as something it isn't.  The use of science to tilt that battle in our benefit is just a technological extension of what our bodies already try to do, sometimes successfully, sometimes not.  

    But yeah, human health is holistic rather than specific: bacteria play roles both helpful and harmful in that overall system.
