    Mr Doingbusiness, God spare us from a college professor in high cabinet positions.  No way!!!  They cannot sell anything and they are so often visionaries and impractical politically. Look at the second term of Woodrow Wilson -- ever the Princeton "professor."  
        Here is who you want at Treasury or FedRes: Hoenig of the Kansas City Fed.  He is exactly right, and he is from west of the Mississippi River and not of the NY banking establishment. As you note, that is the kind of background we want. NO MORE INSIDERS.  But also, keep professors professing, not governing.

      their ability to explain their positions clearly and to set forth understandable policy.

      I don't think we need any more Fed people within Treasury. We need people who consider the effects of their policies on the general public, not the banks.
