    It doesn't matter what Atwater's motives or intentions were, what matters are his actions.

    Was Ronals Reagan a homophobe? Personally, probably not since he worked with them in Hollywood and in his Administration.

    But his actions in office were homophobic. And that's all that I can judge him by.

      This same argument comes up about George Wallace. He didn't run on a segregationist platform in his first campaign for governor. After being soundly defeated, he allegedly declared: "I'll never be out-segged again."

      These men are not off the hook with me. They were worse, not better, than honest-if-ignorant racists. They knew better and did it anyway.
