    of the current GOP (a different one can certainly takes its place but it's going to take some time for it to get up to speed) along the same lines is that, to hold on to their ever crazier base, they've had to move more and more to the right, which has alienated them more and more from the center. And since there are fewer new voters to be found on the far right than are to be lost in the center, this is ultimately a self-defeating strategy for them. They have passed the point of not only diminishing returns, but negative returns. The more to the right they move, the fewer net voters they have. Thing is, if they reverse course, they lose the base, and likely won't be able to make up for it with centrists. That takes years, maybe decades. So really, they HAVE to retool.
