    any relationship to mine.

You think that all churches are mainly funded by the rich?  I don't think you know a lot about many thousands of churches without any wealthy members at all.

The poor and middle class give much more to churches - and in higher percentages - than the wealthy, in my experience.

But you may be more familiar with prestige churches where the contributions are a form of social currency.

The religious/conservative right worships the wealthy.
Yes, there are many churches that simply rely on the weekly donations of the congregation but that doesn't stop them from courting those with deep pockets.

Maybe my experience is with more affluent churches but I see a lot of them.

My friend, who is a church Deacon, was tasked with beginning the recruiting process for a new minister.  He told me that I would be surprised at the salaries expected by recent seminary graduates who never held a job as minister before:  six figures with benefits, housing and transportation provided.  Maybe they are worth it but I never thought of dedicating you life to the Lord as being so lucrative.

I am not trying to say these are bad people.  I believe that most feel they are truly doing God's work and that the money they raise brings positive effects into people's lives (which I am sure it does) but sometimes, raising money can become an end result in and of itself.  At that point, the lines blur from doing God's work and becoming a business.
