  •  Yes, civil rights should never be put on hold. (8+ / 0-)

Last weekend I was shocked to hear a very dear and Democratic couple friend of ours tell us that they hoped the newly minted Democratic congress in Minnesota didn't move "too fast" on gay marriage rights. Their reason was some kind of hazy, fear based thing I couldn't get my hands around.

The thing is, I KNOW these people absolutely support gay rights, including marriage. But when they figure it into a complicated political landscape, they fear a "one issue" coalition.

And boy, did I speak up. I asked them if they would feel the same if the issue at hand was the right for blacks or hispanics to marry.  That stunned them into silence.  Thankfully, they are GREAT people, and willing to examine their own beliefs, and not angry with me for making mine clear.

When a football team is on the 10 yard line with a first down, do they get conservative with their hopes?  Nope.  That's exactly where I think we are---on the 10 yard line with a first down.

We need to drive it over the end zone, and imo, it won't hurt Democrats a bit to do so.
