A few years ago, I actually was out canvassing in an upscale neighborhood in southern CT on LI Sound that might as well have been a gated community.  About every third house was enclosed with an electrically actuated fence to allow the owners' cars into and out of the property.  I reminded me of the oligarchs' communities I'd seen south of the border.  Sometimes, the gates would be open and the residences were on my list and I had a chance to actually knock on the doors.  Got called "communist" and "socialist" a couple of times too.  The most amusing was the response along those lines from a homeowner over whose shoulder I could see LI Sound through the center hallway and family room in the back of the house.  I've always wondered how she felt about Federal flood insurance and how she would feel the morning after a hurricane ripped through the area, since the house was no more than 200 feet from the Sound and likely no more than five feet above it.  I'm sure it boiled down to socialism for her and free-booter capitalism for everybody not well connected.
