    Every 4 years the electorate is different.  The Obama campaign understood that well.  They knew that there would be a drop-off from 2008 simply because of the high unemployment rate and lower growth rate.  They worked to find voters and votes wherever possible to add to their baseline margins and succeeded.  I would also state that a key in FL and other battlegrounds is that Obama limited his losses in red counties.  From a glance at various key counties in FL, NH and a few other states, Obama's margins in red counties were about 4% worse than 2008, which is not bad considering the environment and the amount of money the GOP had at its disposal.  That also helps explain why Obama was able to remain competitive in the battlegrounds.
