Despite following all of this way too closely for years, and thankfully for my sanity taking my cues from the likes of Krugman and Baker, et al, I've never heard anyone specify or allude to the following proposal for revenue raising.

Quit paying royalties to oil companies based upon an 1870s mining law governing mineral right extraction, when encouraging settlement in the west was the goal and mineral rights were the bait.

With all the recent news of the new nirvana of natural gas extraction (crossing our fingers not at the expense of our water supply), with the U.S. growing to be one the largest or the largest fossil fuel producer, I think it's high time I start hearing some of our intrepid political leaders suggesting we may have solved our social safety net funding "problem".

We should still tax the hell out of anyone making over 250k, eliminate any special rate for income types, and tax the beejebus out of our natural resources, especially to save up for the inevitable environmental consequences Exxon, BP, and the rest plan on dumping on us anyway.

"extravagant advantage for the few, ultimately depresses the many." FDR
