  •  Yrs ago my husband worked at a distribution center (9+ / 0-)

It was the first year we were married. We were very young and it was the first job he could get. We lived in a small town at the time, he was a very recent college graduate, I was still in college, pregnant, and we were newlyweds trying to live like grownups even though we were really kids.

My husband worked 12 hour shifts in  stifling heat and freezing cold doing back breaking work. One day a week he attended a mandatory meeting all about the evils of unions. The health insurance offered was so terrible and so expensive we couldn't afford it. The only employee benefit was a 10% off card but it was good towards food or sale/clearance items at that time so it did little good and was of little value.

It's not surprising Walmart is the largest food stamp recipient in the country.

We were lucky that this period in our lives lasted a relatively short time before better opportunities came about. My husband did what he had to for his family and I will never forget how sad his eyes became when he spoke of the older folks who were there and would never speak up about the conditions for fear of losing their jobs. In all fairness, my husband didn't either. He just got the hell out of there as soon as he could.

It broke my heart then, and it breaks my heart now.
