  •  Dear Liberal Class - are you dead? (5+ / 0-)

Have you noticed that when what counts as politics is the back and forth between the political parties, the most important issues are not discussed?

For example, it took OWS to get income inequality out in public. Did the campaign talk about jail time for banksters? What about the biggest issue facing human beings, namely the end of civilization from climate change? What about the thousands of military bases in the world and engagement in many covert wars already? What about being the first empire in history that gave away its markets through "free trade" and even rewarded companies who shipped jobs overseas?

This isn't just Republicans. Clinton signed legislation that allowed the banksters to crash the economy and Clinton signed NAFTA.

We are now in a debate about preserving the new deal and the improvements 40 years ago by President Johnson. Is Obama putting up the social programs as part of a Grand Bargain?

A few years ago Chris Hedges wrote an important book "The Death of the Liberal Class" that argued that there has been a traditional liberal class that kept up the pressure so that there was just enough change to keep the system going.

Here he is after the election - first paragraph of his article:

The presidential election exposed the liberal class as a corpse. It fights for nothing. It stands for nothing. It is a useless appendage to the corporate state. It exists not to make possible incremental or piecemeal reform, as it originally did in a functional capitalist democracy; instead it has devolved into an instrument of personal vanity, burnishing the hollow morality of its adherents. Liberals, by voting for Barack Obama, betrayed the core values they use to define themselves—the rule of law, the safeguarding of civil liberties, the protection of unions, the preservation of social welfare programs, environmental accords, financial regulation, a defiance of unjust war and torture, and the abolition of drone wars. The liberal class clung desperately during the long nightmare of this political campaign to one or two issues, such as protecting a woman’s right to choose and gender equality, to justify its complicity in a monstrous evil. This moral fragmentation—using an isolated act of justice to define one’s self while ignoring the vast corporate assault on the nation and the ecosystem along with the pre-emptive violence of the imperial state—is moral and political capitulation. It fails to confront the evil we have become.

    •  I agree, it is part of the fact based reality (4+ / 0-)

and both parties at times seem immune.

One Party however has gone off the rails entirely.

invariably stands in the way of  "political expediency".

This is a main reason marijuana is STILL illegal.

And it is why somebody like me cannot be a politician.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.

Chomsky on his trip to Gaza on Democracy Now.

Asked about the election - transcript from Juan Cole with a full transcript promised later

Chomsky also comments on President Obama’s re-election, saying: "There are two good things: one, the worst did not happen, and it might have. The second is, it is over. We can put it behind us and get back to work." [Transcript to come. Check back soon.]
Chomsky said one can decide who is the better candidate in 5 minutes, then real activists can get back to work on important issues.

People waste too much time on the show, the media event, the sex connections, etc.

Here is the link to the short Chomsky interview from Juan Cole's web page
