  •  "Don't dawdle" when passing a truck, I agree, but: (9+ / 0-)

    don't overdo it, either.

I was driving in the vicinity of Delta, UT on I-15 when I came up behind a specialized tractor-trailer of some sort. The trailer was the same length as the usual flatbed but it had some sort of substantial structure on top of it that made it top-heavy. I watched it for a while some distance back and every time the truck got up to between 50 and 55 mph it would become unstable enough that the back end of the trailer would go a few feet out of the lane, with a frequency of about 1/2 cycle per second.

We were on the way to Las Vegas and I didn't want to make the rest of the trip at 50 mph, so I figured I'd wait until the truck was in the slow part of its cycle and pass quickly.

I was driving a Highlander Hybrid. Those things have just an insane amount of torque when you floor them (the rear drive electric motor kicks in) and I ended up going just about 100 mph at the front of the rig, having started out at 50 or 60 mph at the back end of it.

I know that for a fact because the state trooper I saw parked ahead in the median just as I passed the front of the truck clocked me at 98. It took him enough time to catch up with me that I was able to show him why I had not dawdled in passing the truck, as it was still swerving around as it passed us. So he wrote a ticket for 80 mph which gave me a choice of paying a $600 ticket or going to traffic school online. I chose the latter. Both were better than going to jail immediately or in to see the judge or whatever.

I've been much more careful with that accelerator since then, believe me.

    Moderation in most things.
