  •  I live midway between NYC and Philly. I listen (5+ / 0-)

almost equally to morning and evening traffic reports in both metros.  In both of them, almost every morning and evening, there is a delay because of an overturned tractor trailer.  While some of those may be the result of a truck being cut off by some asshole car driver, almost half of them are one truck accidents by some driver failing to negotiate a curve or jackknifing in the rain or slippery conditions.

The problem is that some truck drivers drive just too fast.  I have seen them tailgate cars in continuous lanes of traffic in an attempt to push them to go faster, or be driving on a rain slicked interstate just too fast to stop if they had to, or drive in fog or snow in conditions that exceed their ability to see in front of them.  I know that in trucking time equals money, but is never safe for a truck to be exceeding 75 mph in a major metro area, yet I see it all the time.  Trucks are a part of this problem too.

A freak snowstorm coated our rural 4 lane parkway with at least 3" of slush which the road crews ignored. So while cars were stuck doing 35 in the right hand lane (due to hazardous conditions on the untreated roadway) the truckers were having a field day, driving 55 plus in the left lane and coating all of us in slush and debris as they passed. It was a fucking white knuckled nightmare, I'll tell you that.

That by far was the longest hour of my life and I'll never forget it. I thought for sure I was going to wind up a statistic.
