  •  Fuckin-A!! (11+ / 0-)

Landing a T-28 on an aircraft carrier is frightening enough. That C-130 pilot must have had balls of diamond.

    •  The Navy pilot received special training, the (6+ / 0-)

plane was modified to get a higher sink rate necessary for carrier landing, and the pilot won a Distinguist Service medal.

I had never seen the U2 footage before, and seeing a plane with only 2 wheels take a wire was very interesting.  I'm not sure if that tailhook was something they just patched on, or what.

... and stopped before the tower? Then backed up and took off again on the recovery path? He took the long line later, but the first one looks like he took the short one just to show that he could.

Why is there a Confederate Flag flying in Afghanistan?

      •  The C-130 had no hook. It is STOL and the carrier (2+ / 0-)

has 27 knots of wind across the deck, which means it has plenty of room to land and take off.  The 27 knots airspeed before the takeoff roll starts means the plane only has to add, likely about 60 MPH before it has enough airspeed to get airborne.

The old C-1A Trader mail planes also took deck launches (no Cat needed) and they needed about 85 knots of airspeed to bet airborne.  I took a deck launch on our ship's C-1A Trader when I was mustering out of the Navy while the ship was on line in Vietnam.  Something about they were not going to return to port just to let me go home.

is off to the right side of the angled landing area.  That's probably about correct in the location of where it stopped.  The angle deck is about 700 feet long.
