    but during WWII, there was a US faction which favored accepting a negotiated German surrender with the agreement that the Nazis had to go as a first condition.  This was quickly shot down, as it was pointed out this was how WWI ended, w/o an ultimate resolution, allowing the Germans to rearm.

    A bit simplistic but it gave rise to the sentiment of all the way to Berlin and no stopping before Berlin, on the grounds that the Nazis were a cancer which had to be excised, regardless of the cost.

    I think the parallel is there
