If the Democrats need competition to keep them sharp, let it be from the left!

The policies of Reagan and Nixon are to the left of both modern parties.

Let's face it - The D's have become the conservatives, and the R's are the Fascists.

There is no liberal party in America.

    •  Absolutely... (3+ / 0-)

Ron Paul had some interesting ideas that moved a lot of young people.  He wasn't a leftist candidate, but he made some sense on military spending.

    •  Ah yes, let's get our own teaparty going. It's (3+ / 0-)

worked so well for the Republicans after all.

No, we work to pull the Democratic Party to the left as much as possible, but don't become the radicals that have ended up destroying the rethugs.  We;ve gotten some excellent progressive candidates in this time around; we need to increase those numbers, and we won't do it by starting another party or putting forward our own versions of the Akins and Mourdochs of the world.

      •  As long as the DLC/New Dem/Conservadem... (2+ / 0-)

...cabal is in charge, it'll be hard to wrest control from them. Steve Israel has to be bumped from the DCCC--he's been a complete disaster when it comes to recruiting and backing viable candidates to the House.

He put out a bunch of milquetoast centrist/Blue Dogs that got slaughtered this election season. And yet he's still in his position for 2014. His excuse will be "They weren't centrist/moderate enough".

We live in a polarized country, and if the Democratic Party is offering up ersatz Democrats in potentially winnable House races in 2014, voters will notice again.

I'm looking for liberals to drive the conversation from the left.

There seem to be plenty of liberal people in this world.  They have active political representation - just not in America.

Why can Europe do this, but we can't?

I'm torn about this, myself.  Vote splitting sucks when it lets the fascist R in because the liberals split their vote.

        Paul LePage, anyone?  Ugh...

      •  A left-wing party would actually help (1+ / 0-)

the Democrats in certain ways, by providing political cover and leverage in their dealings with the Republicans.

as far as left-wing extremism goes, the "extremists" I know on the left want to preserve earned benefits without cuts, provide a green WPA that revamps our infrastructure, create a single-payer healthcare program, and get rid of indefinite detention and the idea that the President can order people shot if he likes.

Comparing that to the Tea Party--many of whom want the President dead--is just wrong.

        •  But the idea of splitting the Democratic party (0+ / 0-)

into the liberal and "moderate" sides is exactly what the teaparty has devastatingly done to the rethugs.  How about instead we continue our "big tent" idea and work like hell to pull the entire party back to the center, then maybe even a bit to the left? Myself, I think that has a much greater likelihood of success without the likelihood of total failure.

          •  well the proof of the pudding (0+ / 0-)

would be if you could get large numbers of the uninvolved types who think the system is too corrupt for their participation to throw themselves into the new party.  I think getting larger numbers of the American people to participate in  politics would be a good thing, and having them come into a third party to the left of the Dems would also be good.

It is very difficult to do without the large amounts of money/media machine it takes to spread the word about the third party, candidates, etc.

But there are definitely lots of people out there who would respond to a traditional populist pro working-class New Deal message, I think.

          •  That said, I am also OK with trying to (0+ / 0-)

pull the Dems to the left--

actually, I see the third party idea I'm suggesting as one way of doing that.

I'm open to other ideas too.  So far, though, the method of just talking to the Dems and asking them to move to the left hasn't worked. I wish it would.
