  •  We're in trouble? (12+ / 0-)
...if the right finds ways to dismantle their own xenophobia we're in trouble.
I get what you're saying, but ultimately, I see this as a Good Thing for everyone.  We want less xenophobia, don't we?  The only "trouble" for Democrats would be in our diminished ability to denounce the other side on this score.  A shifting leftward of the right wing is good news for us -- because it means the country has shifted leftward.

Potentially more trouble for us (and what I expect to happen) would be not a true dismantling of their own xenophobia, but rather a change in tone and narrative that only fools people into believing that a change has occurred -- when in fact it hasn't.

Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.

    •  Immigrants and Minorities won't forget (6+ / 0-)

Back in 1994, the California GOP went strongly behind the anti-immigrant Proposition 187.  Latinos shifted overwhelmingly to the Democratic Party and haven't come back since.  In the meantime more Latino citizens became voters while Green Card holders also became citizens and  voters. California's electorate now has a higher Latino (and Democratic voting) component than in 1994. A state that gave the country two Republican Presidents in the 20th Century now in the 21st Century is solidly in the Blue column.  National Republicans beware, especially those in Arizona and Texas. You are in line to become a political minority party.  Say hello to The Whigs your the way out.

in general is always a good thing, it doesn't necessarily equate with " a shifting leftward of the right wing". For that you'd need more economic equality as well as more ethnic or sexual equality.

Economic inequality is the core belief of the Republican Party, and has been from its founding. It's the party of business, and especially of big business. Nothing will change that, short of the dissolution of the GOP. Our job is to demonstrate how very few people that philosophy benefits.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."........ "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little." (yeah, same guy.)
