You missing the point, deliberately IMHO. You made the claim that BPD will kill you "as surely" as having a bullet pass through your brain. It most certainly won't, in most cases. It can and in that case, you are just as dead. It is just much less likely to happen. You can die from diarrhea under circumstances, but  it's nowhere nearly as deadly as AIDS or a malignant brain tumor.

    •  The POINT is, we can't treat one person (0+ / 0-)

differently than another just because WE think their illness is more legitimate or not. You think a bullet through the brain is more reason to give Gabby Giffords some slack because she could have died from it? Maybe that's even more reason that she should have immediately resigned. Or when Ted was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Does that make him MORE honorable because he stuck it out till the end?

None of that applies. The individual has to make decisions for themselves based on their own situation, and it's not up to us to decide that one isn't as deserving of space and understanding as another.

If an employer decided that the person with cancer could take time off, but the person with Bipolar Disorder cannot, because cancer is such a tragedy, and Bipolar Disorder is just a stigmatized illness they don't understand, they would be sued by the EEOC.
