  •  They obscure views, are ugly and we're not ... (0+ / 0-)

... accustomed to them. (Say what you will. It is a fact - that latter point is very important to public acceptance.) Moreover, there are alleged navigation hazards, effects on shore and migratory birds, high capital expense necessitating high consumer rates or government subsidies and - in the particular case of the Cape Wind project - the issue (tardily raised) of preserving sacred native American ground.

Opposition to the Cape Wind project was not just from the Kennedys and because of the views.

We can deride these other objections, but several are compelling enough to have stalled the project for years. The farther offshore these wind farms are sited, the less important many of these objections become - but not all - and the more expensive the project gets. No matter how imperative is the ultimate goal of harnessing alternative sources of power, there are economic tradeoffs. Time, delays and money will sink these projects.

I'm being realistic here. I'm in favor of the Cape Wind project, as well as an alternative that's farther offshore and not in Nantucket Sound. But we need to be realistic about the time it will take to site these big wind farms near urban areas, beaches, etc.

PS: You shoulda heard the objections when a single wind tower was sited next to a public high school. To my list above, you can add: danger (an errant fan blade), attractive nuisance (kids will climb it), noise (a big and constant whoooosh!), lack of conformance to zoning requirements (yeah, they're new! and it's near residential areas, which are strictly zoned), what if this clears the way for wind turbines to be EVERYwhere, etc., etc. The objectors were not the wealthy, but year 'round residents of a vacation island who, in other respects, are quite environmentally conscious. And tellingly, no proponent argued that the thing was going to be beautiful.

2014 IS COMING. Build up the Senate. Win back the House.

    •  Fine (3+ / 0-)

Then cut off their fucking electricity. Unless they're getting it from solar.

Non-renewable energy is not sustainable. Watching people scrabble around for excuses to avoid renewable energy, and thinking they're environmentalists because they buy Fair Trade coffee, is frankly pretty pathetic.
