  •  This made me laugh ... from the Front Page (8+ / 0-)

    Story on Hostess:

Followed by story on Republican Governors meeting:

By the way, the biggest political loser from Superstorm Sandy is Newark Mayor Cory Booker. I am not sure how he can run against Superhero Governor Chris Christie which is too bad. Gov. Christie will be using his NJ governorship to launch a 2016 presidential bid and the last thing we need is a Republican who appears reasonable but who still supports the Republican party's agenda. Much better for him to try to launch his bid from loserville.

    •  Cory sure tried hard in the storm (9+ / 0-)

responding to tweets to help out people before, during and after.  He's young, there's time for him.

Now Christie really should lose some weight.  It would be good in many ways, maybe inspiring others to do the same, and would give us evil dems one less thing to nitpick about (he can't be that healthy).

      •  Cory Booker is pretty cool. (6+ / 0-)

He is young and energetic. It will be an interesting race should he decide to get into it because the differences will be stark:  Booker is the future, Christie is the status quo. If he chooses not to run, that would be a bad sign.

when he went on Press the Meat and defended the hedge-funders.  That was a mistake. When it gets to the point (which no doubt it will) that he runs for higher office than governor, you will hear a lot of that on this site.

Cory Booker's constituents are affluent money manager types. And he will need them to fund his campaign. I don't know that he will go to the wall for them like the Republicans will but he will probably always give them the benefit of the doubt it they deserve it.

You are right, the purists here will want to castigate him for that. The purists here, once again, will be wrong. Democrats will often be wrong on some issues but Republicans will always be wrong on every issue.

Jon Corzine was no Purely Progressive Democrat either. In New Jersey it may not be possible to elect such a thing. Over the last 30 years, Florio, McGreevey, Corzine offset by Kean, Whitman and Christie. There is a lot of wealth in New Jersey since parts of it are basically a suburb of New York City.

    •  Well, we will see what happens (7+ / 0-)

to the Republican Party in the interim. Perhaps they will de-Tea-ify themselves, but so far, that doesn't look to be the case. Christie has been running full tilt for governor of New Jersey, meaning, to the center, and his performance with regard to Sandy was the icing on that cake. He's not a stupid guy, and he learned from that "staying in Florida for the blizzard" thing.

If you don't think the Republican "base," which votes in their primaries, has noticed this, check out one of Markos's hate mails today. Christie is shrewd, but I'm kind of hoping the nutcases will be hard for him to romance. I think he'll try to do it by being mean, because that's his greatest skill.

I'm not sure he can be defeated for governor, but obviously we have to try.

      •  Even if they de-Tea-ify themselves, they will (7+ / 0-)

still be wrong for America. The Republican vision for America is the Paul Ryan-Eric Cantor-ALEC vision which predated the tea party. Romney lost because he was an imperfect vessel but he got a shitload of votes. With a better vessel, they win and their budget and privatization schemes win and we lose.

If I recall, Chris Christie thought that marriage equality should be put to a vote: let the majority decide if the minority should have any rights. What could possibly go wrong? He cancelled a billion dollar tunnel project in order to stay "pure" at the cost of jobs and the environment.

The NJ gubernatorial election and the election in Virginia, which were the first electoral victories of the tea party four years ago, will be a good test of our ability to remind people of what the tea party stands for. No one who was born out of that "movement" should survive politically even if he hugged Obama and Springsteen and appears reasonable.

We retire Christie, put a Democrat back in the governors mansion in Virginia, and then set the stage for 2014 to undo the ghastly mistakes made in 2010, including in Wisconsin.

I don't read the hate mail diary and have no interest in doing so. When someone asked recently "why doesn't DKos get respect", that diary "series" would be on the list (right under "putting 'dick' in front page diary titles"). It is embarrassing to have that on the front page and even more embarrassing to see how popular it is. It is a bunch of middle schoolers enjoying middle school humor and humor that comes at the expense of people who are mentally challenged. I could never find humor in the calls for violence, either verbal or physical, on those we disagree with.

Those nutcases writing in are probably no more of a force in the Republican party than our nutcases are a force in the Democratic party. President Obama did not bother to appease ours because they are, quite frankly, unappeaseable. They wanted him to be Dennis Kucinich. I take that back. Actually, they wanted him to lose so that we could see how awful life under Republicans would be ... instead of helping him win so that we had a chance of convincing him on the issues that he still needs convincing on. He has shown that he can change his mind on big issues (like marriage equality, for example). Does that fact deter those on the left who want to hate him? No ... facts be damned! They have blinders on that refuse to see anything good about this president.
