    Don't "join" Facebook.

If you do, don't post anything.

If you post, know it will be found.

So don't post anything that can come back to bite.

everything, even encrypted email.  The combination of two software programs called arpspoof and sslstrip means that anyone who knows their way around a Linux command line can sniff your passwords even if the site is supposedly secure/encrypted (i.e. https).  Even using your home wifi isn't safe unless you took steps to disable WPS (i.e. one touch setup, wireless protected setup) because having that turned on makes it easy to get into (not as easy as WEP encryption, but easy enough).

Also, did you know there are keystroke loggers that can be plugged into any power outlet in the house or even attached to your power meter and they can be built for under $500 (yes, controlling compromising emanations isn't just NSA level spy stuff anymore)?

      •  Totally OT Kinda Sorta (0+ / 0-)

If you were to diary an "idiot's guide" sometime, well, it would probably be appreciated.

If you think you're too small to be effective, you've never been in the dark with a mosquito.

        •  Unfortunately, given the level of what used (0+ / 0-)

to be NSA level spy tech being produced by researchers (and anyone else who knows their way around a soldering iron) in their garages I am not sure an idiot's guide is even possible and if written it would sound so paranoid that it would probably be HRed into oblivion.  The point is, if a church or employer or whatever wants certain information on you badly enough they will get it and nothing short of only using your computer in a room fully shielded with copper mesh and only using battery power will stop them.
