  •  "Israel commits Mass Murder and..." Obama is (8+ / 0-)

NOT repeating the same mistake of getting suckered into Netanyahu's (and Hamas's) never-ending conflict wich seems to be feeding both sides with excuses, ad infinitum.

Nay, the president is tooo smart for this shit. He has learned from the past and that means no amount of posturing, yap yapping, loud farting or gesturing of support or chest beating by U.S. is going to make difference or help stop what is going on there.

Time has come indeed for being "silent" and smart.

Tune in to see what time brings.

ps# This type of shooting from the hip diaries are losing their potency...I recon.

    •  $3 billion annually in (mostly) military aid (11+ / 0-)

and lots of loan guarantees on top of that is hardly "silence."

      •  The military aide also has to do with Egypt (5+ / 0-)

It has been US policy for a while to keep the armies of Israel and Egypt on equal enough footing to prevent them from going at each other.

From the Wikipedia page on the Camp David Accords:

The agreement also resulted in the United States committing to several billion dollars worth of annual subsidies to the governments of both Israel and Egypt, subsidies which continue to this day, and are given as a mixture of grants and aid packages committed to purchasing U.S. materiel. From 1979 (the year of the peace agreement) to 1997, Egypt received military aid of US$1.3 billion annually, which also helped modernize the Egyptian military.[18] (This is beyond economic, humanitarian, and other aid, which has totaled more than US$25 billion.) Eastern-supplied until 1979, Egypt now received American weaponry such as the M1A1 Abrams Tank, AH-64 Apache gunship and the F-16 fighter jet. In comparison, Israel has received $3 billion annually since 1985 in grants and military aid packages.[19]
The weird sort of stability that exists between Israel and Egypt is one of the factors that has prevented the whole area from erupting into war.

That and the worst kept secret in international relations, Israel's nukes.

        •  Actually, the weapons are given to Egypt (1+ / 0-)

as a reward for being nice to Israel, and a requirement to remain so.  The weapons, of course, may be used against Egyptians.

Note too that Egypt gets a lot less per annum from the USA than Israel does, although Israel with its first-world economy needs the support a lot less.

          •  The reason this is what got the Egyptians on board (1+ / 0-)

was because they knew that without it they had no hope of keeping up with Israel militarily. Yes, they use the weapons on their own people; maybe the US is an enabler of all the countries that oppress either their own people or someone else, I don't really know.

What I do know is that, if asked, the US State Department would probably put "regional stability" at the top of its list of Middle East priorities. THe military aide to Israel, Egypt, and also Jordan helps maintain that stability.

It is true that Israel gets more aide. Israel also has a lot more countries gunning for her on any given day that Egypt does.

            •  oh really? (0+ / 0-)

Care to make a little list?

All I can think of are Hamas and Hizbullah, which aren't even countries.  Oh, and the occasional attempt at an assassination in some third country that might be perpetrated by Iran -- but against which American military hardware is kind of useless.

              •  Gunning is too strong of a word then. (0+ / 0-)

Israel is still formally in a state of war with Lebanon and Syria.

Egypt remains at peace because it is being bribed by the US.

Iran is a genuine threat from afar based on official rhetoric, policy, and weapons capability.

Out of four bordering states only one has anything close to "warm" relations with Israel.

Does Israel face an existential threat right now? No
Could it in the future from some combination of these countries? Yes, especially if Iran gets a nuke.

        •  who cares what the ostensible reason is? (0+ / 0-)

the point is we give israel a buttload of military and other aid that allows nut&yahoo, and sharon before him, to be a war-mongering, shitheaded bully.

that it is intended to give israel military parity with egypt couldn't matter less to the fact that we enable israel's bullshit in a major way.

you do realize our staunch support of israel is a HUGE part of al qaeda's beef with us, right?

          •  Complaining about Israel (0+ / 0-)

Is pretty much boilerplate for every radical Islamist group out there. In OBL's case it seems that his hatred for the US was based on our troops operating out of Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War.

Read the Wikipedia page on AQ - Israel is barely a blip in their ideology.

What matters to US interests is that the Middle East remain as stable as possible, hence the stability between Israel and her neighbors funded by US taxpayers.

Lets say I agree with you that US taxpayers should not fund oppression by anyone. In that case, we should look at our domestic situation first as we spend a lot more money on things like the war on drugs and incarceration, for example, than we spend on Israel.

Another angle - it has always been the philosophy of the US Government that we are willing to prop up people who do things we don't like in other places for the sake of our own country's interests. Perhaps that is what is going on in Israel; if so, we have enabled far worse regimes than Netanyahu's government in the past and I suspect that we will continue to do so in the future.
