    I Support Puerto Rican Statehood

    •  Off topic - I really wish people would stop (0+ / 0-)

parroting bumperstickers "supporting Puerto Rican statehood" without (apparently) having the faintest idea of what they think they are supporting or what the implications of PR statehood might be.
I lived there many years - grew up there in fact. The crass US culture has infected and distorted a beautiful native culture and sensibility (for starters), and continues apace. The Puerto Ricans currently pay local income tax, but not federal (so if you want statehood please add about 25-30% additional taxation for an-already quasi-impoverished populace). Then imagine the huge influx of US real estate investments that would come with statehood - in other words, land and housing will likely triple - locals won't be able to afford much and will almost assuredly lose economic ground to Yankee retirees, etc., moving south for the sun. Overpopulation? That, too, probably. Accelerated degradation of rain forest, waterways and ocean corals/sea life - yep - you got it!
Listen, Puerto Ricans already have full US citizenship, and enjoy the rights and privileges thereby - they just can't vote for President (unless they move to a US state).
The current "Free Associated State" model for PR has worked well for over 65 years. If you feel you must express an opinion about the matter, at least please do some work so that it is a bona fide informed opinion.
