  •  I recently received some amazing news from my (8+ / 0-)

brother about our father, who has been gone for many years.

It turns out that my quiet, paper-reading, bridge-playing, hard-working father was also a saint. He sent one of my cousins, whose father was a postal clerk, to college and pharmacy school. Throughout my brother's troubled school years he told me he had gotten in lots of trouble that Dad quietly paid for and covered up.

And these were no small pay-offs. He had actually helped relocate and find new jobs and homes for two families. My brother had gotten into trouble with a child in each family, so my Dad helped move the trouble away. According to my brother, Dad prevented him from going to a juvenile home and jail on several occasions. I knew nothing about any of this until a couple of weeks ago.

Dad also helped many members of my mother's large family go to college. One uncle, who had sued his employer and lost, never worked again. Dad bought him a house, helped move him in, and covered both his living expenses and eventually his children's education.

The stories about the many good things our Dad had done continued. I was really amazed and learned a new respect for the man I had called father all my life. Our family was never wealthy, but we lived simply and comfortably. I would never have suspected that our family had the funds to help as many people as my Dad did.

He may be gone now, but my brother helped put my memories of this good man into a new light. My Dad's quiet generosity took my breath away, and will serve as an example the rest of my days.

Those of us who have parents like this, or know of people showing such strength of character, are greatly enriched by the experience.
