  •  Excellent. But I have a problem with the title.... (8+ / 0-)

This was NOT a prison, any more than it was a rehabilitation
facility. Had this been a prison, more than one million souls would not have been murdered there, most of them shot or gassed on the day they arrived.

This was an extermination facility. Not a prison.

Karl Rove, for example, deserves to be in a prison. No one deserves to be in an extermination facility, because they should not be permitted to exist anywhere at any time.

I assume this was an oversight in an otherwise remarkable diary, but please do not conflate extermination facilities with prisons.

    •  You make a fair point (8+ / 0-)

and believe me, I do clearly understand the difference.

"Prison Camp" was another name used for concentration camps, and I wanted to tie this Diary to the ones mentioned in the into ... so I used a little license :)

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

      •  But there is no relationship at all. None. (0+ / 0-)

No "tie" is conceivably appropriate--the only thing they had in common is the word "prison", and given your previous diaries, which you cite in your first paragraph, you are drawing some parallels.  And right at the top of the diary, adjacent to your intro and reference to your own prison experience diaries, you have inserted a photo of the infamous "Arbeit Macht Frei" gate from Auschwitz.  Before reading the rest, I admit I almost puked from what I had thought was an obscene false equivalency.  Now I just see it as a poorly thought out presentation of an important experience.

But I'm not sure what to do when some say "Poorly presented) and others say "Best Diary you ever wrote".

I'll settle for somewhere in the middle.

          •  My suggestion (0+ / 0-)

Remove the references to your prior prison diaries, which have nothing to do with the rich experience you have expressively written about here.

            •  I understand that you feel that way (1+ / 0-)

              But I won't change it.

You are missing the irony in the intro ....

Here is a guy who is quite well known for a series of prison Diaries, yet who once visited a "prison" that is not that .... It was so much more, a fundamental experience" ....

Many folk understood that, and felt it added to the Diary rather than detracted.

I try to write carefully, but I also have to accept that readers will take away different things from their experience of the Diary.

That is what Diarists live with, and I'm comfortable with it.

I also appreciate the critiques, so thank you. The beauty of comment threads is that readers get the benefit of not just the Diary, but all the views that follow it.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

Is a great book that analyzes the evolution of the concentration camps from detention/transition camps to extermination facilities...
