  •  My dad was at liberation of Nordhausen (13+ / 0-)

It affected him deeply all his life.

Great diary but I was also struck by the difference between and extermination facility and a prison.

There were several kinds of concerntration camps, some were for extermination, some were for slave labor, some were just prisons. The NAzis used every kind of prisoner for slave labor. they ran the largest slavery operation in modern history.

It was not Communism that caused this tragedy.
but Communism, especially Russian Comunism, has its own atrocities to look at, some of them on the same scale. Stalin starved and murdered milions of his own people, and others.

    Happy just to be alive

    •  Correct ... (6+ / 0-)

and Auschwitz was actually a prison for slave labor.

Birkenau (Auschwitz 2) was an extermination camp.

The privations of Soviet Russia are a bit beyond the scope of this Diary.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

government used to fund the killing of the buffalo after they found sending the Army after Indians was just to slow to remove them?

Millions of them were "starved and murdered" also.
