    amounts to de facto fascism.

We maintain the facade of representative democracy, and throw the people enough 'bones' to keep them blissfully ignorant, but the top really is calling the shots, and skimming all the cream.

We don't call it fascism because they are hiding it.

They know how fragile their necks are.

I agree that we DO still actually have a democracy.  We COULD change it.  Most people don't even know what the problem is, let alone what to do about it.

      This bit matters.

Conflating indicators of fascism, with the actual imposition of that type of government isn't helpful, but recognising the signs is.

As others have said, we are a long way from that, but it helps to understand history, and what fascism is and means.

We do have a representative democracy, even if it is imperfect and all too frequently represents the wrong people.

We also have the means to make the change we need.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

Based on our UID's, we signed up pretty close to each other! I'd been lurking on DK for at least a year before I signed up. I forget what particular event galvanized me to finally register here but maybe it was the same...

the US in the fall of 2003, to visit someone who turned out to be a Kossack.

She introduced me to the site, and I started paying attention when I returned the following year.

I signed up soon after that.

that you are a wise, honest, generous and handsome man...

The GOP says you have to have an ID to vote, but $ Millionaire donors should remain anonymous?
