    because he is able to build a voting bloc in the senate.  I realize that's an amazing feat, especially considering the stupidity of some of the statements he made and the choice of running mate he made while campaigning for president, but his appeal to other senators is his political party and the fact that the mainstream press shows such deference to him.  Only when his appearances on television do not benefit the stations or networks who bring him on their programs will his power in the senate wane and he become a non-entity nationally.  

    Bottom line, he is able to be taken seriously by trading on his past reputation as a serious, patriotic politician.  What McCain does for these programs is speak to conflict and sensationalism without appearing to be a complete idiot to the viewers.  In what passes for news and political coverage in this country, conflict and sensationalism pay big returns.
