  •  i really hate to defend him, (3+ / 0-)

however, i sometimes wonder what pressure he was under as the son and grandson of admirals.  did he really want to go to the naval academy, did he really want a military life, or was he just raised with the expectation that he would have that life?  was he afraid to go against the wishes of his father, did he have a choice?
my questions go less to his present day lack of substance than to what made him what he is.  At this site we generally recognize what drives those in the underclass (though i hate that word it also applies to me) to be what they sometimes become.  Sometimes those with all the advantages God can bestow on a human being also have pressures they cannot cope with and expectations they cannot meet.

I'd argue that they are less important when he chooses to defame Ambassador Rice the way he did, or foolishly chants "Bomb Bomb Iran" and drags my beloved Beach Boys into it or can't even commend a ceasefire without playing partisan with foreign policy, which the Republicans used to remind us was supposed to have the full support of both parties.

as the House member whototally flew off the handle when an AP reporter questioned some inconsistencies in his descriptions of a confession he either did or did not sign as a POW, calling the reporter's boss to accuse the reporter of glating about his own opposition to the war (a tape of the interview did not bear this out) or who opened an editorial board meeting seeking a newspaper in that state's endorsement complaining about being described in the past as a carpetbagger because he moved to the state specifically with the intent of running for office there.

I keep going around it in my head that I don't know this guy, any more than I know the other admiral's son to be prominant during the same period. But I'm pretty sure Jim Morrison was also a real creep.
