I always wonder why people say that at the same time they're talking about that!? It's almost always someone who wants to take the rightwing side of an discussion but feel inhibited by what they know will follow.

The age of the earth is in dispute for some Democrats; but we aren't allowed to talk about that.
Here you want to say some democrats also believe in biblical estimations of the earths age but your paranoia prevents you from actually coming out and saying it.

Here's a hint... no one is stopping you from "talking about that" talk about it all you want, but don't blame Kos for your fears.

The commenter raises an important reality-based point.  According to Gallup's 2012 survey republicans are more likely to support a young earth creationist view than democrats, a substantial minority of democrats (about 40%) indicate having a young earth belief.

However this 'We're not allowed to talk about it' statement does tend to derail any conversation.

I will point out that the Gallup survey question is phrased in the context of human origins specifically rather than evolution in general or the age of the earth.  In my experience people are much more likely to espouse a creationist viewpoint when asked about human origins compared to more general questions.  But that is something of a side point.  Although biblical literalism is definitely more of force in the republican party than in the democratic party, the republicans by no means have a monopoly on it.

      •  I agree of course (0+ / 0-)

It just struck me how many who comment seem to think the topic is disallowed on dkos by some strange force. I see it quite often in various forms when commenters want to make a rightwing point. No biggie.

As for your more salient point I couldn't agree more. I live in Oklahoma where some yellow-dog democrats still exist. A whole bunch of them take the bible as literal science and make no bones about it.
