The Earth may have been created 4.54 billion years ago, through accretion of granules in the molecular cloud of the nascent solar system.... then the Moon followed about 60 million years later when a Mars sized planetoid broadsided the Earth.

Or the Earth - Moon system may have been created 4.48 billion years ago, when two equal sized protoplanets collided and destroyed each other, with their remains forming the two bodies we know today (some of the material in the larger body was thrown in orbit by virtual of the high angular momentum of the new system.)

    •  Given that the Sun is supposed to be (0+ / 0-)

about 4.57 billions years old, it seems there was a whole lot of coalescing and accretion going on back in those days.  Since that time, we've revolved around the Milky Way fewer than 20 times.  It takes a while.  It will take a while for the GOP to learn science, too.
