  •  Keep in mind, this is NJ (7+ / 0-)

I have lived here 50 years. We do no have such disasters; the weather is fairly lame most of the time; 6 inch snowstorms are a big deal ( though we have our share of huge blizzards ) but mostly the weather isn't much to talk about. Except for recent years. We usually shrug off hurricanes because there is too much cold water, the storms usually head east, etc. At the school i work in, the friday before the storm people were like meh, it's already going out to sea...I said no, it will not. We will not have school Monday. Alas, we did not have school for two weeks. Part of my town is on the waterfront, the Arthur Kill, but forutnately, the remaining homes there ( most were demolished decades ago to make way for refineries, hence the name gasoline alley ) are up high. The marinas however were destroyed. And the gas storage tanks were under water, adding to the misery. There are pictures of the jersey shore from decades ago when storms destroyed Harvey Cedars; we know that Hog island in NYC was swept under by a hurricane, but it had been so long. We thought we would be ok, It couldn't happen here...modern technology would save us, houses are built better, and so on. i know Raritan Bay intimately; I fished it most of my life; I know Great Kills harbor on Staten Island, Keyport Harbor where the blues show up first every spring; Atlantic Highlands harbor, where I used to fish on the headboats; gone, all gone. Next week, we'll try to go fishing again, at least one of the Belmar boats will be sailing. But it won't be the same.
