I stopped shopping at Walmart years ago when I was made to understand the shameful way their workers were treated.  No retail workers are treated well, but what Walmart does to their workers, especially when they complain about working conditions or wages and benefits, amounts to retaliation and extortion of the very people who keep the owners obscenely wealthy.

Maybe I'll saunter down to my local Walmart and loudly refuse to cross the "picket line" and encourage other shoppers to do the same.  Maybe I'll remind those shoppers that every dollar Walmart refuses to pay in benefits, such as health insurance, ends up being paid by the shoppers' taxes when the workers are forced onto Medicaid rolls or into emergency rooms.

      •  I don't shop there either ... (5+ / 0-)

... but am considering bringing the picketers some homemade cookies.

But I'm not sure if anyone will be picketing stores in Maine.  When I entered my ZIP code at the "action" link provided by Rachel Colyer's e-mail, I didn't see the kind of information (e.g. time) I saw at other sites, nor did I see it at stores in larger, more urbanized areas.

almost every store in San Antonio is on their list.  Taking homemade goodies is a great idea. Or some lemonade - the daytime temp is still in the low 80's here.

At the trough of Corporate Welfare by denying adequate compensation & benefits to their employees....

If they treat their employees that way, can you imagine how they treat their customers?

On Black Friday I typically try to avoid going near any heavy retail shopping areas to avoid being tied up in the gridlock circus, but this year I may break that tradition and visit Walmart to stand in support of their workers.

I resent Plutocrats not giving their employees adequate compensation & benefits, transferring the cost to the other taxpayers in the form of offering Medicaid, Food Stamps, & Earned Income Credit as a "Company Benefits Package."

I may be able to drive by a couple of the sites here in town, but am not going to be able to do much beyond that, after all. can't afford any possible police interaction, as I'm trying to get Perm.Res. status! oh well, teh hubban' promises I'll get lots of opportunities to play politics when we get North, 8-)

We haven't done more than an annual "window-shop" to check their lying prices, in, well, ever. We're old and it took long enough for Debil-Mart to get to our area that we were completely skeptical, immediately!

We also don't shop Target except for medical supplies -- filters for air cleaners are medical priority in this house-of-allergy! and the Target across the street from the Wally SuperStore carries the best brands of air cleaners, and has been the most reliable source of the filters & pre-filters over the years. Other stores in town will carry a model for a couple of years, then switch to something else. The Target has been reliable, in this at least.
