    In fact, I'm not even convinced flying people in and out of nowhere is an optimal means of expanding networks or foster collaboration.  Modern telecommunications provides a richer exchange than a time-boxed oratory and a short Q&A.

    Granted, some conferences are fun, and morale may be an argument in and of itself.  However, I'd dearly love to see some real research on the efficacy of conferences before I sign on to these talking points.

      these types of people.  You never know when a chance meeting will offer answers or add new questions/directions.  There's more chance for adhoc questions being asked.

      Sometimes teleconferencing is way too structured.  Many are too intimidated to actually participate.  Teleconferencing could take place for sub groups of the conference as a whole, or to follow up on things from the conference, or to even prepare parts of it.
