The best attitude to adopt is for the poor to see themselves as members of the middle-class that are being poorly served, and the rich to see themselves as members of the middle-class who are fortunate.  It doesn't help for anyone to internalize class distinctions or to identify overmuch with one extreme or another - if society focuses too much on a poverty identity, the results are not pretty for anyone; and too much with an aristocratic identity, nothing changes.  Social mobility depends on people locating their "social soul" in the middle, where opportunities and obligations are in balance.
