  •  The impact on poorer regions needs action NOW: (7+ / 0-)

HoundDog's diary from yesterday should be required reading b/c the impact on the poor is the most dangerous and certain impacts of global warming.  BUT, it is also a consequence that can be addressed now, ahead of the worst consequences.

New crops need to be introduced in areas that will be drier to alleviate food shortages - - less rice production in areas that will be drier, more in areas that will be wetter.  And, more importantly, more soy and nuts that can provide a protein based diet.

Better logistical planning.  New ports in poorer areas so they are more able to receive imported food sources at lower cost than air/roads.

Restoration of tree, grassy areas that traditionally suck up carbon and research into ocean photosynthesis micro organisms that are responsible for the majority of carbon use in the world and supplemental measures of moderating loss.  We can plant trees and grasses NOW.

Family planning measures for areas already overpopulated where the public WANT medical care to ensure family planning and the poverty that results from lack of it.

These measure will take resources but will be significantly less than the costs of war resulting from competition for resources and more importantly, the costs and ineffectiveness of intervening to alleviate suffering as it is happening.

Blessed are the peacemakers, the poor, the meek and the sick. Message to Repug Fundies: "DO you really wonder "what would Jesus do?" I didn't think so.
