Are there processes or reactions might result in a resource that we can use?

    Something like:

    (CaOH)2 -->CO2 --> CaCO3 + H20

A solution of calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) reacts with CO2 to produce calcium carbonate (limestone or chalk) + water

What other processes work that way?

President Barack Obama. Good man in a storm.

Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle and oxycombustion-burning coal with pure oxygen both produce fairly pure CO2 so you don't need to separate them but of course you also need to build a new expensive 'clean coal' plant.

      •  The industry is going to have to change... (0+ / 0-)

The industry has already proven it CAN change, provided we force them to. They have never acted without the government forcing them to by law.

But many plants can be retrofitted with CO2 sequestering methods, and if others have to be torn down and replaced from scratch, so be it. Many more can be built once their output won't kill us all. What we do and how we do it we can share with the world to get all nations on board. The Sequester industry can be a big money maker, win win.

Politically it may be necessary to nationalize both the oil/gas industry and the electric power industry.... temporarily... to remove them from the equation in any resistance to the changes, and to allow government money to help fund the changes, and then sell/return the assets to previous stockholders once complete.

Taking the 5 mega oil corporations out of the equation with Congress would allow us to get the work done without years of needless delay would be smart, and we can use the oil/gas profits to fund the coal power plant refits, poetic justice if ever there was.... punishment for years of climate change denial and obfuscation that has cost us critical years in our response time.

You name the main way in which Earth by itself regulates CO2 content of the atmosphere. Weathering that is. At its most basic, hot rock forming processes in the crust create rocks rich in MgO and CaO. These come to the surface, and there react with CO2 to form carbonates. And these carbonates go into the oceans sediments and there become subducted into the deeps.

But that cycle takes millions of years. It works guaranteed - its the reason we can be confident that if humanity manages to kill itself by ecological destruction, then over a geologically short time span, a vibrant biosphere wizll restablish itself just as it did after other mass extinctions. But for us this mechanism in its natural rate is by far too slow.

people have suggested helping it along by spreading as much as possible of the basic oxides out as widely as possible, but doing so would require great energy investment to artificially crush and spread the rocks and if we produced that energy by traditional means then it would be entirely selfdefeating.

people have suggested capturing the CO2 (CCS) and injecting it into the earth in places to have it make carbonate underground but again the turnover rates would be difficult to achieve and the energy to sustain that turnover by itself would have to come from somewhere.

biochar formation is maybe the one thing that could be used by people to actually extract CO2 in resonable volumes and rates to have an effect. That´s be fixing the C as C - not as carbonates - thanks to the aid of plants. I know not enough about that, but I have heard say that that could be a part of a solution. Terra preta on a gigantic scale - have people go out of the cities, give up urban life and go out to work the land to draw down the carbon. Would we do it?

what could make us do it?

Do we need poverty to save us?

involving algae to produce gasoline directly, which is fed by CO2 we sequester. If this can be truly industrialized on a mass scale, we might not need to use OIL for any stupid purpose like burning, and save it for plastics and chemicals.

But all methods should be pursued, pumping into the ground, making cement, feeding algae, and whatever other ideas we can come up with.

If we can make coal power plants that have little emissions, we can keep our economies going, growing, and the rest of the developing world can join us, all without killing the planet.

In the big picture, oil and gas are actually way too important in chemical and plastics to be burning them just to drive around and heat the house. It's nutz on it's face, not to mention insanely polluting.
