This is a power struggle. between the GOP establishment and lets just keep doing things the way we always have been doing it. And Chris Christie.
Christie might be representing to them what the GOP must look like from now on if they are ever going to win anything in the future.
And Christie has demonstrated that he is his own man and will not take marching orders from "The Base" or GOP leaders.
And they also know that is how a lot of Republican voters can lets say save face and still vote Republican by voting for people like Christie. Christie because of his response to the President as well as his response to Sandy might get him reelected, by putting the people in the state of New Jersey first.
The GOP with all it's money and Pacs and people who yield extreme executive power over potential candidates can't touch Christie with a ten foot pole. Any candidate they try to insert into a campaign would get laughed into the Atlantic Ocean or flung into Sheap's Head Bay.
And the GOP establishment doesn't like things like that.

Potential Republicans candidates might look at Christie and say, hey there is a way out of the morras of the stupidity of the established Republican platform I can attack it like Christie. Even if he doesn't get reelected.

And I would hate to think what will happen when the people of New Jersey read this. There might be some GOP defections.
In a true act of Bipartisanship the citizens of New Jersey might all get together and write Bite Me GOP in the Sands of Sandy.
They do things like that over there.
