That's it. The take-away that encapsulates the entire thing and wraps it up in a single phrase.

The utter depth of the disgusting behavior that some of the conservative, putative "religious right" have been exposed for over the past decade never fails to stun me.

The fact that their political party continues to self-validate as the "Family Values Party" with the mass media and the electorate - that they are allowed to continue to do so, by that mass media and the electorate - is, in itself, perhaps the most dysfunctional aspect of our society at this time.

I am sick and tired of hearing, endlessly, of the high value of christian morals and that our country is a Christian Nation. The most cogent reasoning I've ever seen on this is this piece at StevenJayGould.org

      EXCERPT

From our perspective these men may be heroes, but in truth the vote they cast was ordinary, routine, normal. It was, in other words, quite well accepted, only a few years after first the Constitution and then the First Amendment were ratified, that "the Government of the United States of America was not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." After a bloody and costly civil war and the passage of the Fourteenth Amendment determined that citizens of the United States cannot have their rights abridged by state or local governments either, religious liberty for all was established. Governmental neutrality in matters of religion remains the enduring basis for that liberty.
