    ...it's ludicrous to think God, what with all the cancer and famine and war in the world, would give a rat's ass about dudes' facial hair. It truly is nothing but humans trying to micromanage other humans' behavior, not a missive from God.

      It isn't just about micro-managing.  Keep in mind that these laws were only ever originally intended to apply to the Israelites; a lot of them, possibly including this one, were and are -- or seem to be -- primarily for the purpose of keeping this one people distinct from all others.  Quite a few laws in Leviticus say explicitly: don't do this thing because it is a thing that the other local nations do.

      Whether or not one considers this a worthy purpose -- or, for that matter, whether or not one considers these laws a good way to achieve that purpose -- given the concept of a "chosen people," it isn't a ludicrous one.
