But, to wax philosophical, from a mechanistic point of view projection seems a most reasonable hypothesis. On the other hand, when 'moral' people try to understand behavior like this it could be that we overlook other models that may be more accurate.

Her profound contradictions between the public and private personae is one data point on the continuous spectrum of similar behavior that few do not engage in, mostly to to lesser degrees. Where does that spectrum cross the line from normal to abnormal, and are all people engaging in public/private persona misalignment doing so because of some degree of self loathing?

I don't know. Maybe she and the others using their public righteousness as a cover to abuse others, sexually in this case, are not distorted by inner conflict, hence 'sick', but merely cynical, heartless bastards with a handy distraction technique, rational sociopaths who just don't have it in them to give a shit about the emotional consequences of their actions. I could list a number of former employers who fit that category. I don't know if they also abused children, but the seemed to have few compunctions when it came to adults.

Just getting a handle on the knobs and dials.... Hey, don't touch that!

like this--they create a public persona that hides their abusive nature from others. They will often take part in charitable organizations or church related activities as a way to make themselves seem like "good guys" to people in their communities. They also tend to believe they are above the law, and that the rules that apply to other people do not apply to them, because they tend to believe they are inherently superior to other people. Therefore, they feel justified when they abuse or exploit a "lesser" person.
